Henry George Simmonds

Born: 26th October 1893.

Place of Birth: Farncombe, Surrey.

Died: On military service 31st December 1916, aged 23, in Mesopotamia.

Parents: Frederick and Eliza Simmonds, nee Boxall.

Occupation: Carpenter. Enlisted in the Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) on 7 September 1914 in Croydon, serving in the 1/5th Battalion, Service No. initially T/2035, subsequently changed to T/240395.

Notes: Henry entered the Mesopotamia Theatre of War on 7 December 1915 and was killed in action on 31st December 1916. At that time Mesopotamia covered both Iran and Iraq. A memorial, designed by Edward Warren was unveiled on 27th March 1929 in Basra, Iraq. It hosts the names of 40,500 British and Commonwealth troops, with no known grave, of which Henry George is one. Basra was the base for the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force, which conducted operations between 1914 and 1921. The batalions WW1 history follows;

04.08.1914 Stationed at Guildford as part of the Surrey Brigade of the Home Counties Division then moved to Maidstone and then Canterbury.
29.10.1914 Embarked for India from Southampton arriving at Bombay 02.12.1914 and the Division broken up.
07.12.1915 Deployed to Basra and joined the 34th Indian Brigade.
May 1916 Brigade transferred to the 15th Indian Division.
11.11.1916 Transferred to the 12th Indian Brigade of the 12th Indian Division.
31.10.1918 Ended the war in Mesopotamia, near Hilla south of Baghdad.
