John William Burton's army service card gives few details. However, we can see
he was awarded the Victory Medal with Star and was discharged 24 August
1916. He was discharged due to being unfit for further service. Within
the family two reasons for his condition exist, one that he was
maltreated as a prisoner, the other that he was gassed. He died in the
Army Pensioners Hospital, Witton, Birmingham, on 31st July 1919, at the
age of 48.
