Notes: Norman joined the Royal Navy at HMS Ganges, aged 17, on 12 September 1925, Service Number J115108, on a 12 year engagement. He was 5ft .5in tall, 35in chest, dark hair, Hasel eyes with a dark complexion. At aged 18, he was 5ft 2in with a 36.5in chest. He joined his first sea going ship, HMS Iron Duke on 26 June 1926. When married in 1934, he was serving on HMS Courageous an Aircraft Carrier. Subsequently, both these ships were sunk with a high loss of life, during WW2.
On expiration of his service on 11 December 1938, he was transfered to the Royal Fleet Reserve. He was recalled to the colours and joined HMS Terror on 19 August 1939. His second spell of service ended on 24 October 1945 and again transfered to the Royal Fleet Reserve. He was awarded both the Royal Naval and Royal Fleet Reverve Long Service and Good Conduct Medals.
Prior to service in the Royal Navy, Norman Ernest enlisted as a Territorial with the Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment on 15th October 1924. His enlistment was for a four year period, but this must have been curtailed for him to join the Royal Navy in 1925.
