The Spens family were the Lairds of Wormiston and Hereditary Bailes
of Castle Crail, Crail, Fife, Scotland. The title of Laird of Wormiston
ceased on the death of David Spens 1538. He was killed, in the seige of
Stirling in 1571, when trying to abduct Lennox, the Regent of Scotland. Both
were killed, possibly by the same shot. As a result of David's
involvement in the seige, the family were deprived of their estates.
